  7. Once in everyone's life, there descends a time when
  8. (s)he must hack*.  In the case of some Mac programmers,
  9. the urge to hack can become an obsession, bordering
  10. on the illicit, causing untold whispers of furious denial
  11. in halls distant, only known to the coder, the honky
  12. codemer, spirits flailing, softness darkening,
  13. and overheated silicon merging with the soul.

  15. Today: such a time in my life.  I felt like doing something
  16. totally obsolete and useless to future generations, so I
  17. wrote it partially in 68k assembly and threw routine
  18. descriptors to the wind.  I took five minutes out of my
  19. day to implement that most curious of bit buckets, A
  20. Macintosh Hack.

  22. CPCopland is a very small, simple hack:  It fools the
  23. System into treating files with a type of 'APPC' as files
  24. of type 'APPL'.  In other words, the System believes 'APPC'
  25. files are really applications.
  26.  
  27. What's the point?  Control Panels in Copland will be full-
  28. fledged applications.  Therefore:
  29.  
  30. 1.  It would be a Good Thing to unified control panel
  31. standard for Copland and System 7.
  32. 2.  Developers need to test Copland-destined Control Panels,
  33. and they can't do that until they actually posess Copland.
  34.  
  35. CPCopland offers a way to do either.
  36.  
  37. CPCopland should operate under any version of System 7.5;
  38. it's my guess that if it's incompatible with some other
  39. extension, it's the other extension's fault.
